Renowned Nigerian gospel singer, Bunmi Akinnanu, affectionately known in the music world as Bunmi “Omije Ojumi,” has died.
She died at a hospital in Lagos. Her family confirmed that she passed away on January 12, 2026 while receiving care at a hospital in Lagos before the announcement was shared publicly.
The cherished worship leader’s passing was confirmed on Tuesday in a statement attributed to her family and shared on Instagram by her colleague, Alayo Melody.
In the post, alongside a photo of the late singer and a somber video of her remains, he wrote, “With great sadness 💔😭 we announce the passing of Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnanu Adeoye (OMIJE OJUMI), who passed away on 12th January 2026 at a Lagos hospital in Nigeria. May God grant her eternal rest 🙏.”
Akinnanu’s death comes after months of public concern over her health. In late 2025, a viral video from a church service at G.F. David Ministries in Ibadan, Oyo State, showed her seated with her leg extended while prayers were offered for her recovery.
In that footage, the officiating cleric revealed she had been suffering from persistent bleeding in her leg, a condition that sparked intense prayer campaigns online but whose exact medical nature was never officially disclosed.
The video and subsequent social media posts prompted an outpouring of support from fans and fellow gospel artists — some of whom appealed for financial help to assist with her treatment and care as her condition worsened.
Bunmi Akinnanu began singing at the tender age of 10 and later left a more conventional career in banking to fully devote herself to gospel music, a transition that won her admiration and a loyal fan base. She rose to nationwide recognition with the hit worship anthem “Omije Ojumi”, a song whose title means Tears of My Eyes and which resonated deeply in churches, prayer meetings, and among believers across Nigeria and beyond.
Over the years, her ministry expanded with several spiritually uplifting songs, many of which became staples in Christian gatherings and helped solidify her reputation as a powerful voice in the gospel genre.
Tributes have continued to pour in since news of her passing, with admirers and colleagues remembering her as a devoted servant of God whose music brought comfort, hope, and inspiration to countless lives.
