LOSC Lille sealed a dramatic 1-0 victory over SC Freiburg with a stoppage-time penalty in the UEFA Europa League, securing a place in the knockout play-off round.
Despite suffering their first European defeat of the campaign (W5, D2), Freiburg still finished inside the top eight and booked an automatic spot in the last 16.
Lille entered the final league-phase matchday under pressure, having lost five consecutive matches in all competitions, knowing they needed at least a point to stay in the play-off picture.
Freiburg, by contrast, were relatively comfortable, with only a highly unlikely sequence of results capable of pushing them out of the automatic qualification places.
With both sides aware of the stakes, the opening half unfolded cautiously. Chances were limited, though Hákon Haraldsson came closest for the hosts with a speculative long-range effort that bounced just wide, as Lille’s counter-attacks failed to yield a decisive opening.
The tempo lifted after the interval, and Freiburg nearly struck first when Junior Adamu broke clear of the Lille defence, only to fire his attempt high and wide.
Jan-Niklas Beste then forced Berke Özer into a smart save with a dangerous delivery, while Lille responded moments later as Matias Fernandez-Pardo raced through on goal but was denied by Noah Atubolu.
The contest swung firmly in Lille’s favour when Maximilian Eggestein was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Fernandez-Pardo, handing the hosts control in the closing stages.
Lille eventually made their dominance count deep into stoppage time when Cyriaque Irié brought down Fernandez-Pardo in the penalty area. Veteran striker Olivier Giroud stepped up from the spot and calmly converted to send Stade Pierre-Mauroy into celebration.
Although Lille lost four of their final six league-phase matches, qualification was secured thanks largely to their formidable home form, with Les Dogues now boasting 13 wins from their last 17 European outings at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy (D2, L2).
Freiburg’s defeat drops them to seventh in the standings, but an automatic place in the Europa League last 16 ensures the German side’s campaign remains firmly on track.
