Ghana edge Mali 1-0 to boost World Cup hopes

Ghana boosted their chances of booking a spot at the 2026 World Cup after edging Mali 1-0 in Accra.

The breakthrough came four minutes into the second half when Alexander Djiku pounced after Mali’s goalkeeper, Djigui Diarra, misjudged Jordan Ayew’s curling corner.

Despite controlling much of the last 30 minutes, Mali could not capitalise on their pressure, with the Black Stars’ defence holding firm to preserve the slender lead.

The result pushed Ghana to 19 points, reopening a three-point gap at the top of Group I ahead of the decisive final two games next month.

Otto Addo’s men will travel to face the Central African Republic before hosting Comoros, knowing a single victory could seal back-to-back World Cup appearances.

Under CAF’s qualifying format, only the winners of each of the nine groups earn direct tickets, while the four best runners-up advance to the continental play-offs.
