Gateway Games: Tragedy as 20 Kano delegates die in road accident

A dark cloud descended on Kano State on Saturday following the tragic loss of 20 members of its National Sports Festival contingent in a fatal road accident.

The victims were en route back to the state from the recently concluded NSF, which took place in Ogun State.

Reports indicate that the crash occurred in Dakatsalle, a town located about 50 kilometers from Kano city.

The ill-fated vehicle was transporting athletes, officials, and other team members when the incident happened.

Confirming the heartbreaking development, the Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Kano chapter, Zahraddeen Saleh, disclosed that the deceased included athletes, journalists, medical staff, and administrators.

Kano State’s Commissioner for Youth and Sport Development, Mustapha Kwankwaso, also issued an official statement addressing the tragedy.

He revealed that others who sustained injuries in the crash were receiving medical attention and responding well to treatment.

Kwankwaso conveyed the government’s condolences, stating, “On behalf of the Kano State Government and the good people of the state, extended heartfelt sympathies to the affected athletes, officials, and their families.”

Describing the incident as a profound loss to the state, the Commissioner added, “This is a deeply painful moment for all of us. We are devastated by the news of the ghastly accident that occurred as our athletes were returning home after representing our great state with pride and commitment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire sporting community in Kano.”

He emphasized that the state was in mourning and reaffirmed the government’s resolve to support the victims and their families during this difficult time.

“The government stands firmly with the affected individuals and will ensure they receive the necessary medical attention and support,” he said.

Kwankwaso also commended the efforts of emergency responders and healthcare workers who swiftly attended to the scene.

He assured the public that the government would receive a comprehensive report on the accident and take appropriate measures.

In his closing remarks, he reiterated the government’s dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of all athletes and officials representing Kano at both national and international sporting events.
