A 19-year-old Metz defender, Tahirys Dos Santos, showed extraordinary bravery during a devastating bar fire in Switzerland after rushing back into the burning building to save his girlfriend, an act that left him critically injured as the tragedy claimed 40 lives.
The fire reportedly erupted without warning on the first floor of the bar, where dozens of young people, including Dos Santos and his girlfriend, had gathered to celebrate.
The young footballer initially escaped the flames, but quickly realised his girlfriend was still trapped inside. Acting on instinct, he returned into the inferno to pull her to safety.
“He went back inside to pull it out of the flames. Apart from being a victim of this fire, Tahirys is above all a hero.””, his agent, Christophe Hutteau, said.
The rescue came at a heavy personal cost. Dos Santos sustained burns to about 30 percent of his body, mainly on the back of his neck and torso.
Medical officials say the next four to five days are crucial in determining whether the injuries become infected.
“Tahirys is suffering a lot from pain,” his agent added, confirming that the teenager is currently in intensive care.
Dos Santos is regarded as one of the most promising young talents at Metz. A left-back, he has already trained and featured with the club’s Ligue 1 first team despite his age.
While his future on the pitch is temporarily uncertain, attention remains firmly fixed on his recovery following the heroic act that has drawn widespread admiration.
