Free Nnamdi Kanu for treatment, Ohanaeze begs FG

Nnamdi Kanu vows not to beg for freedom

The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, has appealed to the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, so he can access proper medical treatment.

In a video message shared on Thursday, Azuta-Mbata stressed that Kanu’s continued detention offers no significant benefit to the government and urged authorities to embrace dialogue in resolving the matter.

“I would like to call upon the Federal Government of Nigeria to quickly release Nnamdi Kanu. The Government has no serious advantage in keeping him,” he said.

“It is important that the Government ensures his safety and welfare, and that he is allowed to go and get medical treatment as quickly as possible.”

Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since his controversial arrest in Kenya in 2021. His detention remains one of Nigeria’s most divisive political and security issues.

Azuta-Mbata further called on the government to pursue a political settlement rather than a prolonged legal battle.

“The Government must adopt a political solution to this situation. I do not believe that the Government has any serious advantage in keeping him any further,” he insisted.

Beyond Kanu’s case, the Ohanaeze leader also urged Igbos across the country to take part in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

“I’m calling upon Ndigbo, wherever you are in Nigeria, to quickly go and take advantage of the voter registration exercise going on right now. Go and get your cards as quickly as possible,” he added.
