Flamengo and Bayern Munich have become the first two teams to secure places in the Round of 16 at the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
Bayern, the reigning Bundesliga champions, sealed their qualification with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Boca Juniors in the early hours of Saturday.
The Germans had opened their campaign in dominant fashion, thrashing Auckland City 10-0.
In the clash against Boca, Harry Kane gave Bayern an early lead in the 18th minute. However, Miguel Merential responded with a moment of brilliance in the 66th minute to level the score.
It was Michael Olise, one of the tournament’s standout performers, who eventually clinched all three points for the Bavarians.
With one group match remaining against Benfica, a draw would be enough to see Bayern top the group, potentially setting up a Round of 16 showdown with Chelsea, should the Premier League side finish second.
Flamengo were the first side to book their knockout berth after mounting a comeback to beat Chelsea 3-1 on Friday night.
