A fire outbreak on Saturday night razed four vehicles and a container at a mechanic workshop located on Togunde Street in the Akingbade area along Old Ife Road, Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State.
According to The Punch, the incident was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan by the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Services Agency, Moroof Akinwande.
Akinwande, who is also the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, disclosed that the fire occurred at about 9:16 p.m. and was traced to sparks from an engine compartment.
Although no life was lost in the incident, the fire completely destroyed four vehicles and a container within the workshop premises.
The statement read, “The Oyo State Fire Services Agency attended to a fire incident at a mechanic workshop on Togunde Street, Akingbade area, Old Ife Road, Gbagi, Ibadan.
“At exactly 21:16hrs on Saturday, June 13, 2026, we received a distress call from Mr Damola reporting a mechanic workshop on fire at the above address.
“Fire personnel, led by CFS Adekola, promptly mobilised to the scene. Upon arrival, it was discovered that a container and four vehicles at the mechanic workshop had been engulfed by fire, with thick smoke billowing from the affected vehicles and container.
“The fire was swiftly contained by personnel of the state Fire Service, preventing it from spreading to nearby properties. Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by sparks from an engine compartment, which ignited combustible materials.
“No casualty was recorded. The firefighting operation was jointly carried out with the Federal Fire Service, Ibadan Command.”
Following the incident, Akinwande advised residents and business owners to prioritise fire safety measures at all times.
He further emphasised the need for workshops and vehicle owners to install fire extinguishers to help curb fire outbreaks before they escalate.
The latest incident adds to a series of fire outbreaks recorded in Ibadan in recent times.
In September 2025, no fewer than 14 shops were destroyed by fire at Ogundipe Market in Ibadan North Local Government Area.
Similarly, another inferno gutted eight shops near the Sango Police Divisional Headquarters in the same local government area in December 2025.
Speaking on the Sango market incident, an eyewitness identified as Bukola Ogundeji had said, “I am not a shop owner there. I only came for a visit, but the incident started around 12:30 p.m. We are yet to ascertain the cause of the fire.”
