FIFA has unveiled a series of major rule changes set to debut at the 2026 World Cup across the USA, Mexico, and Canada, according to Tribuna.
The adjustments are designed to speed up gameplay, cut down on time-wasting, and improve overall match control.
Under the new rules, any player being substituted will have just 10 seconds to leave the pitch. Failure to do so will delay the incoming substitute by one minute, temporarily reducing the team to 10 players.
Time limits have also been introduced for restarts. Players will have five seconds to take throw-ins and goal kicks, with possession handed to the opposition if they exceed the limit.
In a move to address stoppages caused by injuries, players who receive medical treatment on the field must now step off and wait at least one minute before returning, except in cases where the injury resulted from a foul that led to a card.
The Video Assistant Referee system will see expanded powers, including the ability to review wrongly awarded corner kicks.
Additionally, only team captains will be permitted to approach referees for clarification on decisions.
Any other players who crowd or confront the referee risk being shown a yellow card.
The new measures reflect FIFA’s continued efforts to modernize the game and ensure smoother, more disciplined matches at the global showpiece.
