The Federal Government has issued a fresh flood alert, warning that 107 local government areas across 29 states and the Federal Capital Territory are at risk between September 1 and September 15, 2025.
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency said the warning is based on projections in the 2025 Annual Flood Outlook, supported by hydrometric data, river-level forecasts, and satellite monitoring.
Director-General of NiHSA, Umar Mohammed, who signed the advisory in Abuja on Monday, disclosed that over 631 communities and more than 50 critical transport and infrastructure sites could be affected.
“We are looking at risk levels ranging from moderate to very high,” Mohammed said. “These include threats of river overbanking, flash flooding, and waterlogging in riverine and low-lying areas.”
The states under watch include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara.
According to the agency, the potential impact of the floods could extend to road and bridge disruptions, loss of lives and livelihoods, destruction of farmlands, and damage to public facilities. NiHSA also raised concerns about heightened risks of water contamination and disease outbreaks.
The agency urged federal and state emergency response bodies to “activate contingency plans, deploy rapid response teams and stockpile relief materials” ahead of possible emergencies.
Community leaders and local councils were also advised to step up sensitisation campaigns, map out evacuation routes, and prepare shelters for vulnerable residents.
“Individuals and communities must avoid flooded roads, move to higher ground when necessary, and follow official safety instructions,” Mohammed added. “This alert is to protect lives and property, and we call for proactive measures at all levels.”
NiHSA assured Nigerians that it would continue to monitor the situation closely and provide timely updates through its official platforms.
