FG unveils 2025 Democracy Day events, inaugurates committee

The Federal Government has rolled out its schedule of events to mark the 2025 edition of Democracy Day, with a public lecture set for Wednesday, June 11.

In a statement released on Thursday in Abuja, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Segun Imohiosen, announced the development.

According to him, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has constituted an Inter-Ministerial Committee responsible for coordinating a memorable celebration of this year’s Democracy Day.

Speaking during the inauguration, represented by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Akume highlighted the significance of the annual celebration.

“It is my pleasure to welcome you all to the inaugural meeting of the 26th Democracy Day Celebration Inter-Ministerial Committee. This year’s Democracy Day Celebration is an opportunity to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of our founding fathers to attain independence for our dear nation and to retrospect on the daunting challenges and trauma that other democratic champions faced in their collective efforts to wrest power from the grip of military dictatorship. To celebrate this day in their remembrance is to honour and recognise their place in history,” he said.

Outlined in the proposed programme of events are:

A World Press Briefing and Special Juma’at Service, both scheduled for Friday, June 6;

A Church Service on Sunday, June 8;

A Youth Programme on Tuesday, June 9;

A Public Lecture on Wednesday, June 11; and

A Presidential Broadcast and Parade on Thursday, June 12, which marks the official Democracy Day.

The SGF, who heads the IMC, will work alongside the Committee’s Secretary, Engr. Nadungu Gagare, the Permanent Secretary of the Political and Economic Affairs Office in the OSGF.

Other members of the committee include:

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun;

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi;

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Sen. Abubakar Atiku Bagudu;

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar;

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike;

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo;

Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Hadiza Bala-Usman;

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun;

Director General of the Department of State Services, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi;

Commander, Guards Brigade, Brigadier General Adebisi Onasanya;

Permanent Secretary, General Services Office in the OSGF, Dr. Nnamdi Maurice Mbaeri;

and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Kachollom Daju.

As outlined in the statement, the Committee’s Terms of Reference include:

Planning, organizing, and executing all approved activities for the Democracy Day celebration;

Co-opting relevant individuals or organizations to support successful implementation;

Documenting all activities for historical record; and

Performing any other tasks necessary to ensure the effective execution of the celebrations.
