The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing Nigeria’s food security challenges through strategic partnerships with international development agencies.

The latest of such collaborations is with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, as both parties gear up for a major investment summit focused on irrigation and water resources.

During a courtesy visit by the newly appointed FAO Country Representative to Nigeria, Dr. Gudain Hussein, to the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, in Abuja, discussions centered on enhancing agricultural productivity and mobilizing investments to strengthen the nation’s food systems.

Prof. Utsev reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s dedication to transforming Nigeria’s agricultural landscape.

“The declaration of a state of emergency on food security by President Tinubu is a clear indication of this administration’s commitment to achieving food sufficiency,” he said.

“Through our Department of Irrigation and Drainage, we are fully prepared to partner with FAO to boost food production in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Highlighting the federal government’s ongoing efforts, the Minister noted that the Ministry is ready to work with stakeholders to scale up investments across the food value chain.

He stressed that irrigation and water management are crucial to improving agricultural output and achieving long-term food security.

Dr. Hussein, while explaining the purpose of the visit, said the delegation was in Abuja to formally introduce the FAO’s upcoming Hand-in-Hand Initiative for the Sahel, themed “Investment in Irrigation and Water Resources.” The event is scheduled to hold from September 16 to 18, 2025, in Abuja.

“Agriculture consumes nearly 90 percent of available water resources,” Dr. Hussein noted.

“It’s critical that we create strategic frameworks and technical partnerships to ensure sustainable water use and enhanced food production. This forum will offer opportunities for grants, loans, and capacity building in key intervention areas.”

He further emphasized the importance of Public-Private Partnerships across various sectors including crop and livestock production, biodiversity, and climate resilience.
