FG delays Nigerians’ evacuation flights from South Africa to Wednesday

The Federal Government has postponed the planned evacuation of Nigerian citizens from South Africa, shifting the operation to Wednesday due to logistical challenges affecting preparations.

Arise TV news reported that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the adjustment in a statement issued on Monday, noting that the first group of returnees, initially expected to depart the same day, will now travel on Wednesday, 10 June.

According to the ministry, the delay was caused by what it described as “unforeseen logistical considerations”, adding that necessary arrangements are being completed to ensure a smooth evacuation process.

Officials explained that the postponement was necessary to finalise all operational requirements before the exercise commences.

The government has been coordinating the voluntary return of Nigerians who expressed willingness to leave South Africa following recent tensions involving foreign nationals in parts of the country.

More than 1,000 Nigerians have already been screened and approved under the repatriation programme, while President Bola Tinubu has authorised five evacuation flights for the exercise.

The Ministry further stated that details on flight schedules and arrival logistics will be released once final approvals are obtained.

The evacuation effort is part of wider continental responses, as several African countries continue assisting their citizens to return home amid growing concerns over anti-immigration protests and attacks targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.
