The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The decision comes as part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning declared in remembrance of Buhari, who passed away on Saturday.
According to the Minister, the public holiday is a tribute to the former President’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development and national unity.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” Tunji-Ojo stated. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”
He encouraged citizens to use the day to promote peace, unity, and patriotism in line with Buhari’s lifelong vision for Nigeria.
The Federal Government also reaffirmed that all national flags will continue to fly at half-mast throughout the official mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the government extended heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians.
“We pray for the peaceful repose of his soul,” the statement concluded.
