Nigeria’s economic future tied to digital technology – FG

The Federal Government has said that Nigeria’s long-term economic growth, global competitiveness, and public service delivery will increasingly depend on the country’s ability to adopt and expand digital technology.

This position was made known on Wednesday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, while declaring open the Digital Transformation Summit 2026 in Abuja.

Akume, who also chairs the Board of Directors of Galaxy Backbone Limited, described digital innovation as a key driver of national development, stressing the need for stronger collaboration across all levels of government to accelerate Nigeria’s digital transition.

“The future of governance will be digital. The future of economic competitiveness will be digital. The future of public service delivery will be digital,” he said.

The summit, which marked the 20th anniversary of Galaxy Backbone, brought together policymakers, technology experts, and other stakeholders to discuss strategies for strengthening digital governance, infrastructure, and innovation in Nigeria.

Akume noted that Galaxy Backbone had evolved over the past two decades into a critical national institution providing cloud services, secure digital infrastructure, connectivity, and cybersecurity support for government operations.

He said the company plays a central role in enabling Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to function more efficiently through shared digital systems.

According to him, the Tinubu administration’s digital transformation agenda aligns with the broader Renewed Hope framework, which prioritises innovation, transparency, institutional efficiency, and inclusive economic growth.

He, however, stressed that technology alone is not enough to achieve meaningful transformation.

“Powering Nigeria’s digital future requires more than vision. It requires infrastructure, innovation, collaboration and institutions capable of delivering services at scale,” Akume said.

The SGF urged federal, state, and local governments, as well as ICT agencies, to fully utilise existing digital infrastructure to improve governance and service delivery.

He added that stronger partnerships and greater adoption of available systems would accelerate progress toward a more connected and efficient public sector.

“The digital infrastructure already exists. The expertise exists. The partnerships exist. What is required is greater collaboration, stronger adoption, and a shared commitment to accelerating digital transformation at every level of government,” he said.

Akume also commended Galaxy Backbone’s management for its contributions to strengthening Nigeria’s digital ecosystem and expressed confidence in its continued growth.

He further noted that the summit would help shape policies and partnerships needed to build a more innovative and competitive economy, adding that digital technology remains central to Nigeria’s sustainable development goals.
