Panic gripped the Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja, Abeokuta, one of the designated venues for the 2024 National Sports Festival, following a gas explosion that disrupted activities.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when a gas truck, which was refueling the complex’s generating set, suddenly went up in flames, sparking fear among athletes and spectators in the vicinity.
However, emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.
The area has been sealed off by authorities, with more updates anticipated as the situation continues to unfold.
As of the time this report was filed, sporting activities such as handball, squash, and badminton had resumed at the venue.
