FCTA debunks claims of court order halting environmental enforcement activities

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has refuted widespread reports alleging that a court order had suspended environmental services and food safety enforcement sittings within the territory, describing the claim as misleading and inaccurate.

In a statement issued on Thursday by Idris Suleiman, Legal Officer at the Health and Human Services Secretariat, the FCTA Public Health Department clarified that the court order being circulated had been misrepresented.

According to the department, the ruling—delivered by Justice Yusuf Halilu of the FCT High Court in Motion No. M/7935/2026—only applied to the specific case involving H-Medix Pharmacy Limited and did not amount to a general suspension of enforcement activities.

“The interpretation being circulated is false in its entirety and completely misrepresents the court’s decision,” the department said.

It explained that the court merely restrained further proceedings in matters relating specifically to the applicant, and not the broader enforcement framework of the Public Health Department.

“The ruling did not, in any way, suspend or halt environmental health enforcement or food safety sittings across the FCT,” the statement added.

The FCTA further urged residents, traders, and business operators to disregard any suggestion that enforcement operations had been stopped.

It emphasized that its enforcement offices remain operational, while court sittings for the prosecution of offenders are still ongoing.

“The department remains committed to safeguarding public health by ensuring strict compliance with environmental and food safety standards,” it stated.

The administration reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining sanitation and public safety across the Federal Capital Territory, noting that enforcement activities would continue in line with existing laws.
