Family seeks N45.1m for mother’s kidney transplant

The family of a 55-year-old woman, Mrs Opeoluwa Dorcas, has appealed to Nigerians, corporate organisations and government agencies for financial assistance to enable her undergo a life-saving kidney transplant estimated at N45.1 million.

According to the family, Dorcas is battling end-stage renal disease caused by chronic glomerulonephritis and requires an urgent kidney transplant after her health failed to improve despite regular dialysis.

Her son, Joshua, said the family had exhausted its financial resources on treatment, even after receiving support from friends and members of their church.

He explained that his mother undergoes dialysis twice every week and has already completed more than 50 sessions.

“We received support from friends and our church, but the cost of dialysis and medications has consumed almost everything we have raised. She has been doing dialysis twice a week, and she has undergone more than 50 sessions,” Joshua said.

He added that each dialysis session costs about N45,000, while other expenses include kidney function tests, blood transfusions, echocardiograms and medications.

A medical report from PurpleMed Specialist Medical and Kidney Centre in Oyo State confirmed that Dorcas had been diagnosed with end-stage renal disease secondary to chronic glomerulonephritis.

The report put the total cost of the transplant and post-operative care at N45,113,609.09.

According to the cost estimate, the kidney transplant procedure will require about N27.34 million, while one year of post-transplant immunosuppressant medication is estimated at N16.08 million. Another N1.7 million is required for six months of post-transplant laboratory investigations.

Appealing for public support, the family said the rising cost of treatment had become overwhelming.

“We appeal to kind-hearted Nigerians, organisations and corporate bodies to come to her aid. She is fighting for her life, and the cost of dialysis, medications and ongoing treatment has become overwhelming for the family.

“Every donation and every effort to share her story brings hope and could help give her a second chance at life. No amount is too small,” the family pleaded.
