Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has expressed support for activist, Aisha Yesufu’s decision to protest the new national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee”.
Recall that Yesufu had refused to stand and sing the anthem at an event, instead choosing to sit down, sparking a debate on social media.
Ezekwesili, known for her own activism and advocacy, backed Yesufu’s stance, recognizing her right to protest and express her opinions.
The ex-Minister’s support highlights the ongoing controversy surrounding the new national anthem and the importance of freedom of expression in a democratic society.
Yesufu’s actions and the Minister’s support have sparked a wider conversation about citizenship, patriotism, and the role of dissent in shaping national identity.
Captioning the video, she wrote: “#NotMyNationalAnthem.”
Ezekwesili, who has also been against the national anthem, supported the move in a post on her official X page.
She wrote: “@AishaYesufu, Definitely #NotMyNationalAnthem as I already publicly conveyed.
“In my case, whenever and wherever the National Anthem is called for, I shall continue to sing #AriseOCompatriots as #MyNationalAnthem.
“The Lawmakers @nassnigeria and the @NGRPresident grievously breached the Constitutional provisions and process for amendment of legislation and therefore cannot foist another National Anthem on us.
“I refuse to join them in the Kangaroo Act of violating the Constitution.”
