As examination malpractice syndicates increasingly exploit online platforms for illicit gains, the Oyo State government has reinforced its prohibition on mobile phones, smartwatches, and Meta glasses in schools.

The move comes amid reports that WhatsApp channels have become a major conduit for leaking examination questions, particularly in Oyo State.

The State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Mr. Olusegun Olayiwola, reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding examination integrity in a statement issued Wednesday in Ibadan. He warned that violators would face strict sanctions, especially during examinations.

During a meeting with education stakeholders—including Permanent Secretaries, Inspectors General of Education, and Heads of Departments—Olayiwola emphasized the critical need for discipline and ethical conduct in examinations. He referenced an existing official circular that bars students from bringing mobile phones onto school premises or into examination halls.

“The use of smartwatches, Meta eyeglasses, and other devices capable of facilitating examination malpractice remains strictly prohibited,” Olayiwola stressed, directing school authorities to enforce the policy without exceptions.

The commissioner called on teachers, parents, and guardians to actively monitor students and ensure adherence to the regulations.

“We must all work together to uphold the integrity of our education system and maintain discipline across our schools,” he stated.

The crackdown follows growing concerns over tech-enabled cheating, with the government aiming to preserve the credibility of academic assessments in the state. Authorities have vowed to prosecute offenders, signaling a zero-tolerance stance on examination fraud.
