Ex-Nigerian footballer Mbachu backs Super Falcons for 10th WAFCON title

Former Nigerian international, Stella Mbachu, has expressed strong belief in the Super Falcons’ chances of lifting the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title for a record 10th time.

The Nigerian women’s national team will aim to reclaim their continental crown when the tournament kicks off in Morocco on July 5.

The Falcons last tasted WAFCON glory in 2018, when they edged out South Africa in a tense penalty shootout in the final hosted in Ghana.

However, they fell short at the 2022 edition—also held in Morocco, finishing in fourth place.

To reclaim their dominance, Nigeria must navigate through Group B, which features Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana.

Mbachu, who previously won the WAFCON during her playing days, remains optimistic about the Falcons’ chances this time around.

“The Super Falcons will win every game at the WAFCON,” the 47-year-old said on Brila FM.

“They will not lose any game all in the tournament, you will see. They will come home with the trophy.”

Meanwhile, the team concluded their preparations for the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Ghana’s Black Queens in a friendly match played behind closed doors in Morocco on Sunday.

Goals from Chiwendu Ihezuo, Asisat Oshoala, and Rasheedat Ajibade sealed the win for coach Justin Madugu’s side.

Before that, the Falcons were held to a goalless draw by Portugal in another preparatory fixture.
