Ex-Mexican footballer face trial over ‘abuse’ of girlfriend’s teenage daughter

Former Mexico football player Omar Bravo to stand trial for alleged abuse of teenage girl

A Mexican judge has ordered that former football star Omar Bravo face trial over allegations of sexually abusing a teenage girl.

The 45-year-old, who represented Mexico at the 2006 World Cup and the 2004 Olympics, was arrested last Sunday in Zapopan — a suburb of Guadalajara, one of Mexico’s largest cities.

According to court documents, Bravo is accused of abusing his girlfriend’s 17-year-old daughter over a period of six years. If found guilty, the ex-striker could be sentenced to between five and ten years in prison.

Given the severity of the charges, the judge ruled that Bravo must remain in custody for at least six months while the trial proceeds.

In Mexico, pre-trial detention is mandatory when the accused is considered a potential threat to society or the judicial process.

“For these types of crimes, due to their seriousness, the law provides these types of measures. Six months is a likely time limit because if the trial continues longer, he will have to spend more time in pre-trial detention,” said the victim’s lawyer, Juan Soltero.

Soltero’s legal team submitted 42 screenshots of chat exchanges between Bravo and the teenager, along with a video recording as evidence.

Bravo, who retired in 2018, remains Chivas’ all-time top scorer and earned 66 caps for Mexico, netting 15 goals during his international career.
