Former Arsenal and Netherlands skipper, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, has officially joined Liverpool’s coaching team as an assistant coach.

The Reds made the announcement on Wednesday through a statement published on their official website, confirming the addition of the experienced tactician to Arne Slot’s backroom staff.

“Liverpool FC can confirm a number of new appointments and departures within Arne Slot’s coaching staff ahead of 2025-26.

“Former Netherlands international and captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst joins the Premier League champions in the position of assistant coach, subject to receiving a visa,” the club stated.

Van Bronckhorst, 50, enjoyed a decorated playing career with top European clubs such as Feyenoord, Rangers, Arsenal, and Barcelona.

Following his retirement in 2010 after leading the Netherlands to the World Cup final, he ventured into management, beginning as an assistant at Feyenoord.

“He advanced to take charge of the Eredivisie club himself from 2015 to 2019, and his time at the helm of Feyenoord featured a Dutch league title in 2016-17 and two KNVB Beker successes.

“Van Bronckhorst subsequently took the reins at Guangzhou R&F in China, then Rangers – who he led to a Scottish Cup victory and the Europa League final in 2021-22 – and most recently Besiktas, departing the Turkish outfit in late 2024,” the statement added.

Club Successes at Arsenal and Barcelona

Van Bronckhorst arrived at Arsenal in 2001 and played a role in the club’s Premier League triumph during the 2001/02 campaign.

He also lifted the FA Cup with the Gunners in 2003, following a narrow 1-0 win over Southampton.

In 2004, he made a move to Spanish giants Barcelona, where he added more silverware to his name. He secured back-to-back La Liga titles in the 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons, as well as Spanish Super Cup victories in both years.

A memorable highlight of his time at Barça came in 2006, when he featured in the UEFA Champions League final as Barcelona came from behind to defeat his former club Arsenal 2-1.

On the international stage, Van Bronckhorst debuted for the Netherlands in 1996 and went on to earn 106 caps and score six goals before bowing out in 2010.
