Everton hail Toni Payne, S’Falcons over historic WAFCON win

Everton Women’s Football Club extended heartfelt congratulations to their Nigerian star Toni Payne and the Super Falcons for clinching their record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.

In a thrilling showdown on Saturday night, the Super Falcons pulled off a stunning comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final.

The Atlas Lionesses looked poised for victory after first-half goals from Ghizlane Chebbak and Saana Mssoudy gave them a 2-0 lead.

However, Nigeria’s resilience shone through as Esther Okoronkwo sparked the revival with a goal, followed by a composed finish from Folashade Ijamilusi.

Substitute Jennifer Echegini then sealed the dramatic turnaround with a late winner in the 88th minute.

Reacting to the electrifying match, Everton Women took to X to applaud their midfielder, “Toni Payne and the @NGSuper_Falcons are champions of Africa!

“The Super Falcons defeated Morocco in a dramatic final, coming from behind to win #WAFCON with an 88th-minute winner.

“Congratulations, Toni and Naija! Project X is complete!”

Esther Okoronkwo’s outstanding display, which included a goal and two assists, earned her the Player of the Match award.

Meanwhile, Rasheedat Ajibade was crowned Best Player of the Tournament, and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie walked away with the Best Goalkeeper honor.
