Europa: Stuttgart thrash Maccabi Tel Aviv 4-1

Stuttgart stretched their winning run to five straight matches with a commanding 4–1 victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The Bundesliga side immediately seized control, pinning back the visitors as summer signing Lazar Jovanović impressed early from the right despite having played just 50 senior minutes before this fixture.

Maccabi survived a scare in the 13th minute when Heitor nearly diverted Maximilian Mittelstädt’s cross into his own net, but the pressure eventually told.

Stuttgart broke through when Mittelstädt teed up fellow fullback Lorenz Assignon, who marked his first goal for the club with a crisp low volley, an ideal response after his red card against Bayern.

Maccabi goalkeeper Roi Mishpati later denied Deniz Undav, but Undav soon combined beautifully with Angelo Stiller to set up Tiago Tomás, who scored his first home goal since rejoining the club.

VAR reviewed the buildup for a possible foul by Ramon Hendriks but allowed the goal to stand.

Another VAR check before halftime saw referee Marian Barbu wave away a penalty appeal on Tomás.

Two minutes into the second half, however, Barbu pointed to the spot after Heitor handled in the area, and Mittelstädt calmly buried the penalty for 3–0. Maccabi responded almost immediately as Roy Revivo fired past an uncertain Alexander Nübel to pull one back.

Substitute Dor Peretz went close to further reducing the deficit with a tricky effort that flashed wide.

Sensing a shift in momentum, Sebastian Hoeneß introduced regular starters Chema Andrés, Jamie Leweling, and Bilal El Khannouss.

The Moroccan midfielder was booked shortly after entering, ruling him out of Stuttgart’s upcoming trip to Roma. Nübel later had to deny Revivo again to protect the two-goal cushion.

The closing stages appeared to drift toward a quiet finish until Josha Vagnoman rose to head home a pinpoint cross from fellow substitute Badredine Bouanani, becoming the fourth fullback on the scoresheet.

The win keeps Stuttgart perfect at home in Europe and extends their Europa League streak to three straight victories, five in all competitions when including their DFB-Pokal successes.

They now turn to Bundesliga clashes with Werder Bremen and Hoffenheim before the Winterpause, followed by Europa League meetings with Roma and Young Boys in January 2026.
