Olympiacos continued their impressive start to the UEFA Europa League campaign with a 1-0 away victory over Marseille on Thursday.
Santiago Hezze scored the decisive goal in the 42nd minute at the Stade Vélodrome to hand the Greek side all three points and secure their second consecutive win in the competition.
The victory takes Olympiacos to six points from their opening two matches in the league phase, having begun their campaign with a 2-1 triumph over Jagiellonia Białystok in September.
Marseille were unable to find an equaliser after Hezze’s first-half strike, leaving Olympiacos to celebrate a valuable victory on French soil.
The result further strengthens the Greek club’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stages as they seek to maintain their momentum in the competition.
Under the Europa League’s revamped format, 36 teams compete in a single league table, with each side playing eight matches against different opponents.
The top eight teams at the end of the league phase advance directly to the round of 16, while those finishing between ninth and 24th place must compete in a two-legged knockout play-off for a place in the next round.
Olympiacos will now turn their attention to their next European fixture, when they host Sparta Prague on October 22, hoping to extend their winning run and strengthen their position in the standings.
