Roma endured a night of bitter frustration at the Stadio Olimpico as a resilient Lille side escaped with a 1-0 victory in their Europa League encounter.
The French outfit struck early through Arnar Haraldsson and then survived a storm of Giallorossi pressure, crowned by a scarcely believable sequence in which their goalkeeper saved three penalties, each retaken due to encroachment.
The game could hardly have started worse for Gian Piero Gasperini’s men. Despite Roma carving the first chance through Matias Soulé, it was Lille who silenced the home crowd after just six minutes.
A loose ball ricocheted kindly for Haraldsson, who kept his composure to fire beyond the stranded defence and put the visitors ahead.
From then on, it was one-way traffic. Roma’s front line, Soulé, Evan Ferguson and Lorenzo Pellegrini, forced a string of saves and last-ditch blocks, while Kostas Tsimikas and Neil El Aynaoui both saw efforts somehow scrambled clear.
A heroic goal-line clearance by Mandi ensured Lille went into the break clinging to their slender advantage.
The second half followed a similar script. Roma flooded forward, throwing on El Shaarawy, Mancini, Kone and later Dovbyk in search of a breakthrough.
Lille, however, stood firm and threatened on the counter, with their set-pieces keeping the Giallorossi’s backline on edge. Goalkeeper Ozer, enjoying the game of his life, denied Soulé’s fierce drive from range to keep the visitors in front.
Roma’s golden chance finally came with nine minutes left. A VAR check spotted Mandi’s handball in the area, and the Olimpico roared as the referee pointed to the spot. What followed was pure chaos.
Dovbyk stepped up first, only for Ozer to save. The kick was retaken for encroachment and Ozer saved again.
For a third attempt, Soulé took responsibility, but the Lille keeper completed his hat-trick of stops to the disbelief of the crowd.
That incredible sequence summed up Roma’s evening: all effort, no reward. Despite wave after wave of pressure, the Italians could not find a way through.
At the final whistle, it was Lille who celebrated, leaving Roma to reflect on a night when fortune and a heroic goalkeeper deserted them.
