Europa: Forest beat Villa 1-0 in semi-final first leg

Nottingham Forest made full use of home advantage at the City Ground, claiming a narrow 1-0 victory over Aston Villa in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League semi-final to boost hopes of securing a third major European crown.

In what was the first all-English European semi-final since 2009, both former continental champions began cautiously, with neither side eager to overcommit in the early stages.

However, the tempo gradually lifted midway through the first half, sparked by key interventions from goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, who denied efforts from Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers.

Forest also threatened, forcing Emiliano Martínez into a sharp reaction save to keep out Igor Jesus from close range, ensuring the visitors avoided conceding their first away goal in five Europa League outings.

After a relatively uneventful end to the opening half, both teams returned with renewed intent following the interval. Ollie Watkins tested Ortega early on, but the goalkeeper was well positioned to gather comfortably.

The decisive moment arrived in unexpected fashion when referee João Pinheiro consulted VAR and awarded a penalty after Omari Hutchinson’s cross struck the arm of Lucas Digne inside the box.

Chris Wood showed composure from the spot, firing emphatically into the top corner to seal the only goal of the contest and mark consecutive scoring appearances since his return from injury.

Villa, managed by Unai Emery, struggled to mount a meaningful response after falling behind, while Forest looked the more likely to extend their lead as the game wore on.

With a strong push for a top-five Premier League finish also in sight, Emery may opt to rotate his squad domestically, as attention turns to the decisive second leg where his side must produce a significantly improved display to keep their European ambitions alive.

Forest, meanwhile, will travel with confidence and a slender advantage, though history offers a warning, they have not secured a victory away at Villa since 1994, ensuring the tie remains finely poised.
