Europa: Braga, Real Betis play 1-1 draw in first leg

The Europa League quarter-final between Braga and Real Betis ended in a 1-1 stalemate, leaving the tie delicately poised ahead of next week’s second leg in Seville.

Braga struck early when Florian Grillitsch’s clever backheel redirected Diego Rodrigues’ corner into the net in the fifth minute.

Real Betis, initially sluggish at the Estadio Municipal de Braga, responded quickly, with Marc Bartra’s goal ruled out for offside just two minutes later, and he later struck the post.

The game saw chances at both ends, including Lukas Hornicek saving Cucho Hernandez’s downward header and Pau Victor misfiring on a volley from Victor Gomez’s clever pass.

The deadlock was broken in the 61st minute after Jean-Baptiste Gorby’s reckless tackle on Abde Ezzalzouli gifted Betis a penalty. Hernandez calmly converted, restoring parity and keeping Betis in contention ahead of the return leg.

Braga had aimed to extend their impressive defensive record, with Hornicek needing one more clean sheet to equal the Europa League single-season shutout record held by Volkan Demirel, Sergio Romero, and others. However, Gorby’s ill-timed challenge denied him the chance.

In the closing stages, both teams became cautious, but Betis came close to snatching a late winner when Antony curled a shot narrowly past the top-left corner during stoppage time.

The 1-1 draw mirrored the expected goals (xG) statistics, with Braga registering 1.39 xG and Betis 1.54 xG, underlining how evenly matched the sides were over the 90 minutes.
