Bournemouth began their first-ever European campaign in impressive fashion after defeating Real Sociedad 2-1 in Spain in their Europa League opener on Thursday.
The English side raced into a two-goal lead in the first half, with Justin Kluivert and Rayan finding the net to put Marco Rose’s men in control at the Reale Arena.
Kluivert thought he had opened the scoring when he converted an early opportunity, but the goal was initially ruled out for offside.
However, VAR intervened and confirmed that the forward had remained onside, allowing Bournemouth to take the lead.
The visitors doubled their advantage eight minutes later when Rayan finished off a superb move after being played through by Alex Scott.
The goal gave Bournemouth a 2-0 lead after just 20 minutes of their historic European debut.
Real Sociedad responded before the break as Sergio Gómez pulled one back for the hosts.
His cross evaded both teammates and Bournemouth defenders before finding the bottom-left corner.
The Spanish side stepped up the pressure in the second half in search of an equaliser, creating several opportunities.
Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic produced crucial saves, including a remarkable stop from close range to deny Orri Óskarsson.
Despite the late pressure, Bournemouth held firm to secure a memorable 2-1 victory and begin their first Europa League campaign with three points.
