Beşiktaş opened their UEFA Europa League campaign in impressive fashion on Thursday, defeating French side Marseille 4-1 at the Tüpraş Stadium in Istanbul, with Junior Olaitan playing a key role in the commanding victory.
The Turkish hosts made a bright start and took the lead in the 15th minute when İlhan Fakılı finished off a move created by Olaitan, who produced a well-weighted pass to set up the opening goal.
Marseille responded in the 29th minute as Keyliane Abdallah levelled the scores after being played through by Himad Abdelli.
Despite the visitors’ response, Beşiktaş remained the more threatening side and went into the break with the game tied at 1-1.
Beşiktaş regained the lead 11 minutes into the second half when Václav Černý found the net after Orkun Kökçü supplied the final pass.
The hosts then extended their advantage three minutes later, with Amir Murillo heading home from Kökçü’s corner to make it 3-1.
Marseille struggled to contain Beşiktaş as the Turkish side continued to create openings.
Substitute Ernest Poku completed the scoring in the 81st minute, calmly converting another assist from Olaitan to seal a convincing victory for the hosts.
Olaitan was central to Beşiktaş’s attacking display throughout the encounter, creating chances and helping to unlock the Marseille defence.
Kökçü also made a significant contribution with two assists, while Černý and Murillo were among the other standout performers for the home side.
The result gives Beşiktaş an emphatic start to their Europa League campaign, while Marseille will have to improve after conceding three goals in a decisive second-half spell.
