Aston Villa will head into the return leg of their UEFA Europa League round-of-16 clash against Lille OSC with a narrow advantage after a hard-fought 1–0 win in France.
The decisive moment came from Ollie Watkins, whose brilliant header secured the victory and also delivered the 100th win in charge for Villa manager Unai Emery.
Villa endured periods of pressure at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, but Lille struggled to find a way past goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who made several important stops to keep the hosts at bay.
The breakthrough arrived in the 61st minute. Emiliano Buendía flicked a delivery into the penalty area, allowing Watkins to rise above his marker and guide a clever looping header over advancing goalkeeper Berke Özer.
Villa almost doubled their advantage later when former Lille player Amadou Onana unleashed a powerful long-range effort that rattled the crossbar.
Buendía also came close with an acrobatic attempt that drifted wide as the visitors searched for a second goal.
Despite late pressure from the French side, Martinez’s saves ensured Villa held on for a valuable away victory, taking a slim aggregate lead back to Villa Park for the decisive second leg.
Watkins’ goal further highlighted his aerial ability. Over the last three seasons, the England striker has scored 17 headed goals in all competitions, more than any other player in the Premier League during that period.
The strike also ended a dry spell in Europe for Watkins, marking just his second goal in his last 22 continental appearances and his first since January 2025 against Celtic FC.
Importantly for Emery’s side, the victory was Villa’s first competitive win on French soil — achieved in clinical fashion as they scored with their only shot on target.
