EU foreign ministers to hold emergency talks on Iran Sunday

European Union foreign ministers will convene an emergency meeting on Sunday to deliberate on the escalating crisis in Iran following coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel.

The announcement was made by the EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, who said the bloc would hold an extraordinary session of the Foreign Affairs Council via video conference.

“I will convene an extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council via video link on Sunday to address Iran and the rapidly unfolding events across the Middle East,” Kallas wrote on X.
She warned that the situation risked spiralling into a broader regional conflict.

“The Iranian regime’s indiscriminate attacks against its neighbours carry the risk of dragging the region into a wider war, and we condemn this,” she stated.

The emergency talks come after a wave of strikes on Saturday targeting sites in Iranian cities, including the capital, Tehran, where explosions were reported and plumes of smoke were seen rising over parts of the city.

US President Donald Trump said the objective of Washington’s operation was to neutralise what he described as immediate threats.

“The United States’ military began major combat operations in Iran,” Trump said in a video message posted on social media. “Our goal is eliminating imminent threats.”

He added, “We are going to destroy their missiles and dismantle their missile industry. It will be completely obliterated. We’re also going to neutralise their naval capabilities.”

Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, characterised the action as a “preventive strike,” saying it was aimed at addressing urgent security concerns.

In response, Iran launched retaliatory missile and drone attacks targeting US-linked positions in the region.

However, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces successfully intercepted the assaults.

“CENTCOM forces successfully defended against hundreds of Iranian missile and drone attacks,” the command said in a statement.

“There have been no reports of US casualties or combat-related injuries. Damage to US installations was minimal and has not impacted operations.”

The crisis has heightened tensions across the Middle East, prompting several countries to reassess security measures and airspace operations.

The EU’s emergency meeting is expected to focus on diplomatic responses, regional stability, and efforts to prevent further escalation.
