Eredivisie: Berghuis, Weghorst help Ajax beat Heracles 2-0

2 Min Read

Ajax secured their second home victory of the campaign with a 2-0 win over Heracles Almelo on Sunday. Goals from Steven Berghuis and Wout Weghorst sealed the three points for the Amsterdammers, who now sit on seven points after three league matches.

The hosts flew out of the blocks with high intensity, but their early dominance failed to produce a breakthrough.

The deadlock was finally broken just after the half-hour mark. Oscar Gloukh’s effort was initially blocked, yet the rebound fell kindly for Berghuis, who rifled home with his left foot to make it 1-0.

Despite creating numerous chances, Ajax were wasteful in front of goal and found Heracles goalkeeper Fabian de Keijzer a tough barrier to beat.

The slender lead looked precarious until the 87th minute, when substitute Davy Klaassen set up Weghorst. The striker converted clinically, and after a VAR check, the goal was confirmed.

The result gives Ajax back-to-back home wins to start the season. Next up is an away trip to FC Volendam in matchweek four.

In the build-up to this fixture, head coach John Heitinga had been handed a boost in training as defender Josip Šutalo and striker Brian Brobbey returned to full group sessions after recovering from injuries.

Their return added depth to the squad, helping Ajax maintain momentum in front of their home fans.
