Newcastle secured just their second away win of the Premier League season with a 3-1 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor, thanks to early strikes from Joelinton and Yoane Wissa.
Joelinton opened the scoring in sensational fashion, netting his first league goal in a year after just 65 seconds. Wissa, making his first Premier League start for the Magpies, followed up six minutes later with his first league goal, giving Newcastle a commanding early lead.
Burnley fought back when Josh Laurent scored in the 23rd minute, pulling the hosts back into contention.
However, despite dominating much of the second half and creating multiple chances, the Clarets could not find an equalizer.
Bruno Guimarães sealed the win for Newcastle in stoppage time following a defensive mix-up, leaving Burnley without a win in 10 games and six points from safety.
The win marked Newcastle’s first road triumph since their 4-1 victory at Everton on November 29. Yet, the Magpies’ performance was far from flawless, with Burnley controlling much of the second half before Guimarães’ late strike made it 3-1.
Burnley’s problems started immediately. Anthony Gordon’s low cross allowed Joelinton to easily intercept Hjalmar Ekdal and score, setting the tone for the early blitz.
Wissa’s goal came from a scrappy sequence after Newcastle won the ball back, prodding home from close range despite Burnley’s protests of a foul on Laurent.
The Clarets’ woes were compounded when Maxime Estève, returning from a two-game absence, limped off just 13 minutes into the match.
Despite Newcastle’s early dominance, they nearly handed the game back. Laurent capitalized on a blocked Lucas Pires cross, firing beyond Nick Pope to halve the deficit.
Newcastle should have restored their two-goal cushion quickly, but Wissa squandered multiple opportunities, including two close-range chances. Harvey Barnes also saw his shot saved by Martin Dúbravka, keeping the game tight.
Burnley pushed forward relentlessly in the second half. Loum Tchaouna, Marcus Edwards, and Laurent all had opportunities to level the score, but Pope, Dúbravka, and some desperate defending kept Newcastle ahead.
Ultimately, Newcastle’s late third goal came courtesy of a mix-up between Ekdal and Dúbravka, allowing Guimarães to strike from distance and confirm the win.
The Magpies leave Turf Moor with three crucial points, but questions remain over their ability to hold leads away from home, while Burnley’s winless run continues.
