Aston Villa’s shaky start to the Premier League season worsened on Sunday as they suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace, marking their first loss at Villa Park in any competition in nearly 10 months.
The visitors controlled much of the action, taking an early lead through Jean-Philippe Mateta’s penalty.
England international Marc Guehi, reportedly a Liverpool target, doubled Palace’s advantage with a precise finish in the 68th minute, before Ismaila Sarr sealed the win.
Palace celebrated their first victory of the season after two draws, climbing to eighth in the table, while Villa remain second-bottom with just one point from three games and yet to open their scoring account.
“Every game he brings something new, and he is a fantastic player. I hope he stays with us,” Mateta praised Guehi following the match.
Villa had been unbeaten in 19 consecutive home league games, a streak stretching over a year. Coincidentally, Palace were the last side to defeat them at Villa Park, winning 2-1 in the League Cup in October of last year.
