Fábio Carvalho struck deep into stoppage time to snatch Brentford a thrilling 2-2 draw against Chelsea at the Gtech Community Stadium.
For a moment, it seemed the visitors had secured all three points when Moisés Caicedo rifled in from distance with five minutes left, capping an impressive second-half surge driven by substitute Cole Palmer.
Earlier, Kevin Schade had given Brentford a deserved lead just before the interval, only for Palmer to haul Chelsea level shortly after his introduction.
Caicedo’s rocket appeared to complete the turnaround, but Carvalho had the final word, ghosting in at the back post to rescue a point for the hosts.
Chelsea had dominated possession throughout but lacked incisiveness in the first half, and Brentford’s organised resistance paid off when Schade outpaced Trevoh Chalobah and cut inside before calmly slotting beyond Robert Sánchez.
The visitors’ response came after the break, when manager Keith Andrews unleashed his bench.
Tyrique George tested Caoimhín Kelleher within seconds of the restart, while the introductions of Reece James, Marc Cucurella, and eventually Palmer transformed Chelsea’s rhythm.
It was Fernández’s delightful lofted ball that set up João Pedro to flick into Palmer’s path, the England international calmly finishing to make it 1-1.
Both sides had chances, Sánchez produced a superb save to keep Schade out, while Kelleher denied Palmer a second goal.
Chelsea finally thought they had sealed victory in the 85th minute when Caicedo unleashed a thunderous strike from the edge of the area.
But Brentford refused to fold, and in the dying seconds Carvalho slid in at the far post to ensure the spoils were shared in dramatic fashion.
