Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has announced the retirement of the number 5 jersey at Rangers International FC in honour of Christian Chukwu.
The declaration came during a Night of Tributes dedicated to Chukwu, who passed away on April 12 at the age of 74.
Governor Mbah described the move as a befitting homage to a player whose legacy is deeply embedded in Nigerian football.
“As a fitting tribute to his exploits as a central defender, we will be retiring the iconic number 5 jersey that Chairman Chukwu proudly wore throughout his Rangers career.
“Through these steps, future generations will walk paths illuminated by Chukwu’s ideals,” Mbah told News Agency of Nigeria.
A native of Enugu, Chukwu is remembered as one of Nigeria’s most outstanding defenders, having captained both Rangers and the Super Eagles.
Governor Mbah also assured that the Enugu State Government would take responsibility for the welfare of 109 former Rangers players, while collaborating with the Federal Government to further enshrine Chukwu’s legacy.
Chukwu made history by leading Nigeria to its first Africa Cup of Nations triumph in 1980, and later managed both the national team and Rangers, earning admiration for his discipline, humility, and enduring passion for football.
