Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has officially laid the foundation for the Nsukka International Market, a massive 5,000-shop facility set to transform commerce in the region.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, Mbah assured that his administration would continue to consider the interests of individuals affected by development projects, stressing that the initiative was driven purely by public interest.

He dismissed claims that the project was aimed at compensating former traders of the Ogige Market, now the site of the newly built Nsukka Transport Terminal, emphasizing that his “inclusive development” approach ensures that projects of such scale are replicated across the state.

“From Ogbete to Holy Ghost, Abakpa Nike, and Garki, we have had to relocate traders to create room for modern transport terminals,” the governor said. “This is beyond a groundbreaking ceremony; it’s about countering false narratives and ensuring that our development vision touches every part of Enugu State.”

Mbah recalled that the decision to modernize the transportation sector was taken months ago, leading to the construction of world-class bus terminals in mapped-out areas, including Nsukka.

He assured traders from the old Ogige Market that they would be given priority when the new market is allocated, with completion targeted for the end of 2025.

“This will be a one-stop shop for commerce, providing opportunities for all,” he stated.

Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Mr. Jude Asogwa, hailed the governor’s developmental strides, noting that the market, alongside other projects, would bring economic relief and empowerment to the people of Nsukka and Enugu North Zone.

“We are still celebrating the world-class transport terminal you built for us, and now you have brought this massive market project,” Asogwa said, adding that traders whose shops were affected have been asked to register their names for shop allocation.
