English League One side, Barnsley has parted ways with Super Eagles midfielde, Kelechi Nwakali following his late arrival for the club’s pre-season activities.
Barnsley manager Conor Hourihane confirmed that the Nigerian international will be allowed to leave the club before the summer transfer window closes.
The 26-year-old had been sidelined since returning late from holidays in Nigeria, which led to his exclusion from first-team training.
As a result, Nwakali missed recent matches against Plymouth Argyle, Burton Albion, Fleetwood Town, and Bolton Wanderers.
This disciplinary issue adds to Nwakali’s controversial record, as he was previously dismissed by Spanish club Huesca for a similar offence.
Hourihane speaks on Nwakali’s future
Ahead of Barnsley’s clash with Peterborough United, Hourihane addressed the midfielder’s situation at his pre-match press conference.
“Obviously there’s a couple of weeks to go in the window. Let’s see where it takes us,” the manager said.
When asked directly whether Nwakali would be allowed to depart, Hourihane was clear, “Yes, that’s the plan.”
Nwakali still has two years remaining on his contract with the Tykes, where he featured in 26 matches across all competitions last season.
