The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned a 60-year-old man, identified as Ajayi Femi, for allegedly raping a 24-year-old woman after drugging her in Lagos.
Police spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.
According to him, the case was first reported on August 22 by the survivor’s sister and later transferred to the Gender Unit of the Command for proper investigation.
“Findings revealed that the suspect laced the survivor’s drink, rendering her unconscious before having unlawful sexual intercourse with her without her consent,” Hundeyin stated.
He added that medical examinations conducted by the Gender Unit corroborated the survivor’s account, and the suspect admitted to the crime during interrogation.
“The suspect also gave a confessional statement. He has since been charged in court and remanded in prison custody pending the next adjournment date,” Hundeyin said.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, vowed that the Command would pursue justice in the matter and ensure survivors of sexual offences get the protection of the law.
“We remain committed to tackling all forms of sexual and gender-based violence. Survivors are encouraged to report such cases promptly at the Family Support Units across divisions and area commands for swift justice,” Jimoh assured.
