The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 14 individuals linked to a violent incident that occurred during a protest in Makurdi on Sunday, June 15, 2025, which led to the gruesome killing of a truck driver.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Udeme Edet, the protest—initially peaceful—was hijacked by hoodlums who blocked a road in the Apir area, on the outskirts of Makurdi.

The group forcefully halted a truck and set it on fire with the driver still inside. The victim, who is yet to be identified, was burned alive in the inferno.

The police condemned the act, calling it a tragic outcome of what was supposed to be a lawful public demonstration.

“We strongly denounce this barbaric act. Fourteen suspects have been arrested in connection with the violence, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend all other perpetrators and instigators,” SP Edet stated.

The protest, which took place at Wurukum Roundabout, was reportedly sparked by recent security concerns in the state. In response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, accompanied by the Deputy Governor of Benue State, Barrister John Ode, visited the protest site to address the crowd and appeal for calm.

However, the attempt to engage the demonstrators was rebuffed, with tensions escalating as some elements within the crowd attempted to attack the Deputy Governor.

“In a swift move to ensure safety and prevent a potential breakdown of law and order, officers deployed non-lethal crowd control measures such as smoke and water cannons,” the police said. “Fortunately, there were no casualties during this intervention.”

The police also confirmed that the truck arson occurred later, carried out by a separate group allegedly sympathetic to the protest but bent on violence.

While expressing the Command’s support for peaceful civic engagement, SP Edet warned that violence would not be tolerated.

“We acknowledge the rights of citizens to express their grievances. However, such actions must remain peaceful and within the bounds of the law. The police remain committed to protecting lives and maintaining order in the state,” she affirmed.

Residents have been urged to remain calm as security has been heightened in the area to prevent further unrest. The authorities have also called on members of the public to volunteer any useful information that may aid the ongoing investigations.

The Command concluded by commending peaceful protesters for their conduct and reiterated its dedication to ensuring safety and justice for all citizens in Benue State.
