Don’t carry bags you didn’t pack, NDLEA cautions travellers

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has once again warned Nigerians, particularly air travellers, to avoid carrying luggage that they did not personally pack or whose contents they do not fully know.

This latest warning came from the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, through a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, June 29, 2025.

He referenced a recent incident involving a suspect who was apprehended at an airport while attempting to smuggle illegal drugs.

During interrogation, the suspect confessed that the bag in question was handed to him by someone else.

In a video clip shared by Babafemi, the suspect admitted to NDLEA officers that he had no idea what was inside the bag he was transporting. The suspect’s failure to verify the bag’s contents led to his arrest.

“Please pay close attention to the suspect in this video,” Babafemi urged the public. “When asked if he packed the bag himself, he said no—someone gave it to him. This is exactly why we constantly warn: never accept to carry luggage you didn’t pack yourself. If you do, and you’re caught, you’ll be treated as complicit, because the NDLEA will find you.”

He stressed that ignorance will not be an excuse in drug-related investigations, adding that “it is better to offend someone than to end up in jail for a crime you didn’t knowingly commit.”

The NDLEA’s renewed advisory comes amid rising concerns about drug trafficking through unsuspecting couriers, particularly during peak travel seasons. The agency has consistently emphasized the importance of vigilance, personal responsibility, and thorough checks before boarding.
