Dispatch rider dies in Lagos road accident

A dispatch rider has died following a tragic crash involving a heavy-duty Volvo truck at Otedola Bridge inward Secretariat, along the Ogudu Toll Gate corridor in Lagos State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the incident in a statement released on Tuesday by its Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq.

The agency noted that the accident occurred less than 24 hours after a similar fatal crash in the state, raising fresh concerns about the safety of dispatch riders on major highways.

“The fatal crash involved a heavy-duty Volvo truck and a dispatch rider. The devastating impact resulted in the immediate loss of the rider’s life at the scene,” the statement read.

LASTMA officials on patrol in the Otedola area quickly arrived at the scene, securing and cordoning off the location to avert further accidents, especially given the heavy traffic volume along the route.

The body of the deceased rider was handed over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps who were present at the scene, while officers from the Alausa Police Station provided additional security.

Authorities later evacuated both the truck and the motorcycle with a tow vehicle to ease traffic flow.

However, the incident still caused heavy congestion, with gridlock extending towards the Berger axis.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy to the bereaved family, describing the accident as unfortunate.

He also emphasised the importance of strict compliance with traffic rules and increased vigilance among road users.

The incident comes just a day after a similar tragedy on Monday, when a tanker reportedly crushed a dispatch rider to death in the Motorways Inward Estate area of Alapere, Lagos State.
