Residents of the Omikunle area in Yemetu, Ibadan, were thrown into confusion on Saturday evening after a liquid suspected to be Automotive Gas Oil, popularly known as diesel, was found inside a community well.

According to the Oyo State Police Command, the incident occurred around 6:50 p.m. on September 6 when officers of the Yemetu Division received a distress call about the unusual substance.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer said a team led by the Divisional Police Officer swiftly moved to the scene.

“When our men arrived, they observed that the well contained a lubricant strongly suspected to be diesel. Some residents had already gathered with containers, apparently intending to scoop the liquid,” the spokesperson explained.

To prevent any danger, armed police officers and members of the local neighborhood watch secured the location.

The Command also contacted the Oyo State Ministry of Environment for expert intervention in managing the suspected petroleum product.

Preliminary findings suggest that the substance may have leaked from an underground storage tank close to the area, seeping into the well.

The police assured residents that there was no cause for panic.

“The situation is under control, investigations are ongoing, and we are working closely with relevant agencies to determine the source and ensure the safety of everyone in the community,” the spokesperson added.

The Command urged members of the public to remain vigilant and avoid tampering with the substance. Citizens were also advised to report any unusual activity to the police through the control room line: +234 808 176 8614.
