Nigerian sprint hurdler and world record holder Tobi Amusan blazed to victory in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Diamond League meeting in Rabat, Morocco, with an outstanding time of 12.45 seconds.
The 28-year-old delivered her season’s best performance, clocking 12.24 seconds and smashing the previous meet record of 12.51 seconds, which had stood since 2018 when it was set by American Brianna McNeal.
This victory marks Amusan’s first major win of the 2025 season and re-establishes her as a top contender heading into the World Championships in Tokyo.
Amusan had a challenging start to the year, finishing fourth in both the Xiamen and Shanghai Diamond League meets in May.
Though she picked up a win earlier in March at Jamaica’s Velocity Fest 16, it came against a relatively modest field.
Her Rabat success is seen as a significant comeback following a tough end to her 2024 season, where she failed to reach the final in the 100m hurdles at the Paris Olympics.
Reflecting on her performance, Amusan emphasized the importance of returning to technical training.
“More hurdles practice, because I had been doing more sprinting. After the first two Diamond League meetings, I knew I had to go back to doing more hurdle drills. Two weeks in, I can tell the difference,” she said.
With the women’s hurdles absent from the Doha leg of the Diamond League, Rabat offered a pivotal opportunity for Amusan to reset her season—and she did so with authority.
