The Defence Headquarters has dismissed claims that notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji, has laid down his arms.

According to The PUNCH, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Markus Kangye, clarified that the fugitive remains at large.

“Simple answer to the question about terrorist leader, Bello Turji — Turji has not surrendered. We are still on the lookout for him,” Kangye stated.

Turji, who operates mainly in Zamfara and Sokoto states, has been on the military’s wanted list for years over allegations of masterminding numerous deadly attacks in Nigeria’s North-West.

In recent weeks, speculation had swirled that Turji had entered a peace deal brokered by Islamic clerics in Zamfara, surrendered his weapons, and released 32 kidnap victims.

The DHQ’s latest statement, however, refutes those reports.
