Veteran journalist and former presidential aspirant, Dele Momodu, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, citing what he described as the takeover of the party by undemocratic elements
According to The PUNCH, in a resignation letter dated July 17, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Ward 4 Chairman in Ihievbe, Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State, Momodu said his exit takes immediate effect and is driven by the need to preserve democratic ideals.
“My reason is simple and straightforward,” the letter read. “Our party has been unarguably hijacked by antidemocratic forces, from within and outside, in broad daylight.”
Momodu, who vied for the PDP presidential ticket during the 2023 general elections, expressed deep disappointment in the party’s trajectory, noting that internal democracy had been severely compromised.
“The PDP has become a carcass in the hands of those who do not respect the principles upon which it was founded. It is, therefore, honourable to abandon the carcass of the party to them while the majority of us earnestly sign up with the new coalition party known as the African Democratic Congress,” he declared.
He also took a moment to appreciate members of the party who stood by him throughout his time in the PDP.
“I will forever treasure the kind support you gave me at all times,” he wrote.
Momodu’s defection comes amid a wave of high-profile exits from the PDP in recent weeks, including that of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. These developments have heightened concerns about growing discontent within the opposition party over alleged imposition of candidates and the erosion of internal democratic processes.
