Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr, has called on FIFA to act decisively by docking three points from South Africa for allegedly fielding an ineligible player in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The issue stems from Bafana Bafana midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who played in their 2-0 victory over Lesotho despite having accumulated two yellow cards, one in the opening fixture against Benin and another against Zimbabwe, a situation that should have triggered a suspension.
Rohr, speaking to Reuters, expressed his frustration at the delay in resolving the matter.
“It is not normal that we don’t know the situation about the points on the log table before our games this week,” Rohr said.
“It is very, very strange. Normally, SA should lose three points, and they [the points] should go to Lesotho. But nobody knows why they [FIFA] did not take this decision.”
At present, South Africa top the group with 13 points, maintaining a five-point lead over Rwanda and Benin.
Nigeria trail by six points as they prepare for a pivotal clash against Bafana in Bloemfontein next Tuesday.
Lesotho sit on six points, while Zimbabwe are bottom with four.
