The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, Theresa Akwaji Ushie, for three months following allegations of financial impropriety and abuse of office.
The decision was announced during plenary on Tuesday in Calabar, following a petition submitted by eight out of the ten councillors of the Bekwarra Legislative Council.
The petition, dated May 19, 2025, accused Ushie of misappropriating public funds, exercising excessive administrative control, and disregarding legal procedures in her official conduct.
According to a statement issued by Matthew Okache, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, the Assembly invoked Section 14(3) of the Cross River State Local Government Law to enforce the suspension.
“In a resolution passed on the floor of the House, the Assembly directed that Hon. Theresa Ushie step aside for 90 days to allow for an independent investigation into the allegations without interference,” the statement read.
The Assembly also upheld the impeachment notice raised by the councillors, stressing the importance of transparency and good governance at the local level.
Speaker of the House, Elvert Ayambem, emphasized the legislature’s resolve to ensure accountability in grassroots administration.
“This House remains committed to upholding due process and protecting the integrity of local government institutions,” he said.
He added, “I charge the House Committees on Judiciary and Public Petitions to begin a thorough probe into the matter and submit their findings within the three-month window.”
In the interim, the Assembly has directed the Vice Chairman of Bekwarra LGA, Egbung Odama, to assume office as Acting Chairman. He is expected to maintain stability and ensure the smooth running of the council pending the outcome of the investigation.
